Know your rights at work
Have you recently been dismissed from your job and feel that it was unfair? Perhaps you are a victim of workplace bullying and/or harassment and want to put a stop to it right NOW. Whatever the issue is, whatever the situation, you should know that the law guarantees many rights in the workplace, which you are entitled to enforce.
Employment law covers a vast amount of situations in and outside of the workplace. Common examples include: employment contracts, holidays, hiring and firing, your right to receive a minimum wage, health and safety, retirement ages and contractual rights of non-permanent and/or part time staff.
Let’s look at some of these rights in more detail.
Employment contract – regardless of your line of work and the conditions of role (permanent, contract etc.), within two months of starting your job, you are entitled to receive a written employment contract, which details the conditions of your employment.
Equal rights for fulltime, part-time and temporary workers – regardless of the type of employee you are, all employees have certain rights that the law applies equally e.g. part time employees have the same rights to statutory holidays as full time employees do.
Discrimination – every employee has the right to work free of discrimination based on nationality, race, disabilities, gender and more recently age. Naturally, laws of this type are also applicable in interviews and the overall employment selection process.
Let’s picture a typical scenario.
John, is 38 and has been slaving away for many years at his job as IT technician in a well-known blue chip firm based in Ipswich. He generally takes pride in his work and does his utmost to make sure it is done on time and is of the highest quality. Despite his hard work and many years of loyal service, John’s employer fails to reward this. Even worse than that, they have been refusing tired John’s frequent requests for a long-overdue holiday, despite the fact he has conformed to all the notice requirements that his employer and the law requires.
What should John do?
John is confused as to what rights he is exactly entitled to. His employers tell him one story, legal sources another. To clarify his rights and make sure they are enforced, he should only deal with diligent, expert employment law solicitors.
